Worked VK9CV Cocos Keeling DXpedition 2024 on 12m!

 Heard VK9CV Cocos Keeling DXpedition 2024 on 24.940 MHz with nice signal. They are listening 5 kHz up. After setting up for split mode for transmitting on 24.945 MHz and receiving on 24.940 MHz and tuning my FT-710 for the frequency using the built-in automatic antenna tuner, I started mentioning my callsign when they were listening. I could get through in my third attempt and I was very happy to work a DXpedition, that too, my very first ever contact on the 12m band. Yesterday I had listened to Burkina Faso DXpedition XT2MD on 12m CW, but only the stations calling them were audible to me.


VK9CV Cocos Keeling DXpedition 2024 has listed 9 operators from Czech Republic on their QRZ page. The plan of operation is from 1st November to 15th November 2024. Modes of operation planned are SSB, CW, RTTY and FT8. Bands planned are from 160 to 10m on HF and QO-100 Geostationary Amateur Radio Satellite. Cocos Keeling Islands have an IOTA or Islands on the Air designation of OC-003, of which OC stands for Oceania region. They are located 137.6° South East of my place, at a distance of 3491.5 km on short path, according to QRZ.COM.

Building a Tape Measure Yagi for LEO Satellite Operations

 The Moxon Yagi which I have been using for my LEO Satellite operations had a Moxon rectangle for VHF and five UHF Yagi elements which were passively coupled to the VHF Moxon driven element. The gain was not that high when I thought of working SO-121 QRP satellite. VU2TEK had good success with his Tape Measure Yagi which motivated me to go for one. But I don't expect the same success as he was operating outdoors, pointing the Tape Measure Yagi in the direction of the satellite pass. I am planning to use only in a mast mounted fashion which will limit its usability for satellite passes to a short period of about 4 minutes. Six Button Wireless Mouse vs Three Button Mouse

 When I started using computers long back, mouse had only two buttons, a left and a right button. Then came three button mouse with an extra scroll button. I have read that there was also a single button mouse, but I have not seen one. Now here is a six button mouse, that too a wireless mouse with a USB-A Nano Dongle and 2.4 Ghz wireless connection. In the earlier era, mouse had a rolling ball which would gather dirt and sometimes stop functioning well. Now we have optimal mouse which uses a red light source and an optical sensor instead of the rolling ball. The wireless mouse works on a single 1.5 V, AA battery with a projected battery life of one year!
